Phonics
In school we teach phonics using the Letters and Sounds programme. Once children have a secure knowledge of letter/sound correspondence and can blend words confidently, they access our Book Banded reading scheme which has books from various published schemes (including Oxford Reading Tree, Wolf Hill and Rigby Rocket) and is designed to give children experience of a variety of reading genres. There are fiction and non-fiction books within each level.
Once children can read fluently and with a good understanding, they self-select books for independent reading from their classroom library.
In addition to this, pupils are encouraged to read at least five times a week at home. These home reads should be recorded by parents in children's Homework Diaries which are monitored regularly by staff.
